Kalvin Duong is a fourth-year student pharmacist at the USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He earned a B.S. in General Biology and a minor in psychology from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
He has been involved in many organizations since starting his pharmacy school journey, such as the American Pharmacy Student Alliance (APSA), Alpha Iota Pi (AIP), and Vietnamese-American Pharmacy Student Association (VAPSA). As a P2, he was the Director of Financial Affairs for APSA and the Director of Membership for VAPSA. As a P3, he served as the Co-Director of Financial Affairs for APSA, Clinical Activities Coordinator for AIP, and the Alumni Liaison for PLS. He is also a member of the Associated Students of the School of Pharmacy Student Admissions Committee and a Student Ambassador under the Margaret and John Biles Leadership Center. By being heavily involved, he does not only want to become a better student or leader, but a mentor to the newer class as they adjust to this drastic transition. Kalvin currently works as an intern pharmacist at City of Hope. He plans to pursue a residency within inpatient pharmacy, specifically focusing more on oncology.
Kalvin is excited for this opportunity to be a part of an amazing board that will allow him to keep doing what he loves which is to provide the same mentorship and support to other student pharmacists along with inspiring others to make the most of their pharmacy school experience.
Advice: Enjoy your time during pharmacy school! It will be tough and challenging, but remember to take things one step at a time and appreciate those that are around you throughout this experience. Just know that everybody will end up right where they’re supposed to be.
Harrison Cheng is a fourth-year student pharmacist at USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is from San Dimas, California, and earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
After entering the rival school across town, Harrison dedicated much of his time to the American Pharmacy Student Alliance (APSA), ultimately serving as the APhA/CPhA President. Through APSA, he had the privilege of working with nearly 40 board members to connect students with leaders from across the country, create patient care opportunities, and enrich professional development for himself and his peers. Additionally, Harrison has served as the Treasurer for both Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) and Rho Chi Society, and was part of the USC Mann Organizational Success & Well-Being Program as an RxBallers President, through which he spearheaded the school’s inaugural set of program-wide basketball tournaments. He continues his involvement as a Biles Student Ambassador and active member of the Student Admissions Committee (SAC), San Gabriel Valley Pharmacists Association (SGVPhA), and Alpha Iota Pi.
Harrison currently works as an intern pharmacist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and CVS/Target Pharmacy in San Dimas. He hopes to pursue a career in ambulatory care to develop impactful connections with his patients and passionately further the push for healthcare accessibility for all.
Harrison looks forward to his second and final year in PLS, where he aims to inspire and encourage incoming student pharmacists to reach their potential as leaders and as future healthcare professionals.
Advice: Work hard, play harder. Your time in pharmacy school is your opportunity to push your limits and discover where your strengths intersect with your passions. However, this is also your time to develop lifelong friendships and create priceless memories. These four years will fly by, so we may as well make every moment count!
Vivian Lan is a third-year pharmacy student at the USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She earned her B.S. in Public Health Science from the University of California, Irvine.
During her first year of pharmacy school, Vivian began her internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. This experience solidified her interest in pursuing an acute care residency post-graduation, though she remains open to exploring other areas of pharmacy, particularly ambulatory care and specialty pharmacy. Vivian’s leadership journey at USC has been driven by her passion for mentorship and professional development. Vivian has been actively involved with the American Pharmacy Student Alliance (APSA) since her first year of pharmacy school. She served as APSA’s First-Year Representative in her first year, the ASHP/CSHP President-Elect in her second year, and the ASHP/CSHP President in her third year. Throughout these positions, she has developed critical skills in event coordination, workshop facilitation, and creating networking opportunities between student pharmacists and pharmacy professionals nationwide. She is deeply committed to creating spaces where students can thrive and grow as future leaders in the profession. Vivian has been fortunate to encounter many mentors throughout her pharmacy journey, who have supported her both personally and professionally.
She is excited to join the Phi Lambda Sigma board, where she can share her experience and passion for leadership and mentorship to help others navigate the challenges and opportunities of pharmacy school.
William Chung is a third-year pharmacy student at the University of Southern California, Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He earned his B.S. in Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2021.
During his first year of pharmacy school, he began his internship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, gaining valuable experience in the inpatient pharmacy setting. To further his goal of entering the pharmaceutical industry, he also took on a second internship at COEUS USA. He is particularly drawn to the medical affairs umbrella for its role in communicating clinical data to improve patient outcomes.
William currently serves as the APhA/CPhA President for the American Pharmacy Student Alliance (APSA) at USC and is actively involved as a Student Ambassador for the Margaret and John Biles Leadership Center, a member of Alpha Iota Pi (AIP), and a seasoned RxBallers champion. His commitment to professional growth has led him to engage with the San Gabriel Valley Pharmacists Association (SGVPhA) and compete in both the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy’s (AMCP) Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Competition and the Industry Pharmacists Organization’s (IPhO) Value of Industry Pharmacists (VIP) Case Competition.
As Treasurer of the Phi Lambda Sigma Phi Chapter, William plans to implement budget optimization strategies and strategic fundraising initiatives to enhance student development programming at USC Mann. By increasing the value and accessibility of events, he hopes to spur meaningful professional growth among his peers.
Mark Hanin is a fourth-year pharmacy student at the University of Southern California, Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Mark holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of California, Riverside. As a student pharmacist, he served as a board member for multiple student organizations such as the American Pharmacy Student Alliance (APSA), the USC Mann Associated Student Pharmacists (ASP), Lambda Kappa Sigma (LKS), Skull and Mortar (SAM), among other organizations. He also served as a fellow for the California Right Meds Collaborative (CRMC) and as a Course Assistant for the USC Mann International Student Summer and Winter Programs.
Mark serves as Class President and as the Student Ambassador Liaison Emeritus for the Margaret and John Biles Leadership Center. Outside of USC Mann, he is an intern pharmacist at DK Pharmacy in Rancho Cucamonga and continuously advocates for the pharmacy profession as a Pharmacy Legislative Week (PLW) Director alongside his involvement with the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP). Mark's journey as a leader taught him the importance of resilience and seeing every experience as an opportunity for growth and development. His future career aspirations include working as a community pharmacist and pharmacy educator, but he is open to seeing where his experiences guide him.
For now, as the Alumni Liaison for Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS), he hopes to connect the past with the present and future of PLS to help inspire student pharmacists to become the leaders of tomorrow. The future of pharmacy looks promising.
Advice: Be gracious with yourself. Take it one step at a time and don’t be hard on yourself. You are not alone. Even if it is challenging, make sure to appreciate the journey you are on and surround yourself with those who support you. You will end up right where you are meant to be no matter what.
Kylan Duong is a third-year pharmacy student at the University of Southern California, Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the University of California, Davis in 2023.
During his first year of pharmacy school, Kylan began his internship at Long Beach MemorialCare Medical Center, where he developed a strong interest in pursuing an inpatient pharmacy residency post-graduation. In addition, Kylan became actively involved in various student organizations. He served as the Level-One Representative for the Vietnamese-American Pharmacy Student Association (VAPSA) and held a First-Year Board position in the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP). In these roles, he acted as a liaison between his cohort and the organizations, facilitating communication, making announcements, and coordinating inclusive and successful events.
In his second year, Kylan expanded his leadership responsibilities, serving as Vice President of VAPSA, Director of Finance for AMCP, Director of Internal Affairs for Alpha Iota Pi, and as a Student Ambassador for the Margaret and John Biles Leadership Center. These roles have allowed him to foster meaningful mentorships and build strong professional relationships.
Currently, Kylan serves as the Historian for the Phi Lambda Sigma Phi Chapter. In this position, he aims to enhance the visibility and engagement of PLS-hosted events, creating greater opportunities for peer mentorship and professional development. He remains committed to personal and professional growth, with the goal of applying his leadership experiences and the guidance he has received to support and inspire others within the pharmacy community.
Tam Phan, PharmD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy (Clinician-Educator) at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Pharmacy. Dr. Phan is a community-based and ambulatory care clinician who currently practices at the Los Angeles LGBT Center to deliver specialized patient-centeredcare for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and people living with HIV. He is also involved in teaching various classes and curriculum development of the USC School of Pharmacy Undergraduate Programs including the Pharmacology and Drug Development major and minor in Science and Management of Biomedical Therapeutics.
He completed postgraduate residency training in community pharmacy practice at the USC School of Pharmacy, where he also received a teaching certificate and his Doctor of Pharmacy. His residency training included providing clinical pharmacy services in the outpatient setting and an extended experience in HIV care at LAC+USC Maternal Child and Adolescent Adult clinic. His practice interests include: primary care, HIV/AIDS care, LGBTQ+ care, comprehensive medication management (CMM), community-based pharmacy practice and operations, integrative medicine, travel health, immunizations, community health, and disease screening, management, and prevention.
Dr. Phan currently serves as the Administrative Chair for Rx Pride, an LGBTQ+ affinity group, Vice-President of Phi Delta Chi Omicron Alumni Association, and Co-Chair of the Dell Scholars Alumni Network as a part of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.
